An isolated backwater until recently, the resort is still relatively unknown by European tourists and property-hunters
ON THE SCENIC RESAD1YE PENINSULAR, Datca is a small town built around a pretty harbour. Bad road access from Marmaris, 75 km east, gave it a feeling of isolation and slowed development until fairly recently. The area is a popular holiday venue for Turkish families, many of whom own second homes in the area. The local population quadruples in summer, to about 45,000. Datca's harbour is a popular port-of-cal] for yachts and several local beaches have been given the coveted Blue Flag award. Work to widen and improve the highway east is largely complete and there is a car-terry from Bodrum in summer. Local shops stock all the essentials, though luxuries and imported goods must be bought from Marmaris. Most of the area's properties have been built for the Turkish market and may need renovation. Prices range from 35,0gbp(X)- over 75,000gbp for a detached villa with garden. In the centre of town, basic re-sale apartments are available from 30,000gbp, with new builds from 50,000gbp, Local developers have started targeting foreign property buyers with new apartment complexes. Largely unknown to European hoi id ay makers, rental potential is poor at present.
